Mayor Hikes the Pinhoti Trail Day 7

ZERO DAY
Day 7
February 20, 2020

Today was as laid back as days get. It rained all of last night and throughout the day. It was “colder than a brass toilet seat in the Yukon.” I sat in the hostel and listened to audio books and podcasts all day with Katana.

Nancy took me to Walmart to resupply around 11 am, and I ordered a pizza at noon. It felt good to do nothing and be out of the elements. Temperatures are forecasted to drop pretty sharply tomorrow. On the brighter side, the overall forecast is still looking fairly clear for the next couple of days.

Slow and Steady…

I hate to jinx myself by voicing any expectations…  Nevertheless, I’d like to average over 15 miles or better per day – for the next three days.  It feels unnatural to have such small-scale goals when I came from consistently doing 30, 40, 50, and 70 mile days only a few months ago.  It seems like just yesterday I was cramming multiple 50 + mile days into a single week.  Now I’m scrabbling to keep my mileage at a fraction of those numbers. That’s the price of hiking with a little handi-capable dog.

Just lemme tell you… the cost is well worth every penny of the purpose and meaning I derive from the quality of time I get to give to this amazing little creature. I don’t even know if she is aware of the overall situation, but that’s really not what it’s about. It’s simply about defying convention and doing the uncommon to provide a more enriched life. I know if Katana had the choice to lie around and wander the same house and backyard every day (as cushy and high quality as that life would be)… or smell and explore new things every day – she would choose the latter. I think any dog would. And of course, we always get to come home in the end and enjoy the comforts of convention, with just a little more appreciation than the last time we left.
