After getting all my laundry chores and resupply squared away, I had lunch with an old friend – Sonic! I hiked with and around Sonic for almost 500 miles back in 2017 out here. She lives in Jackson, Wyoming – about 70 miles west of Duboise and wanted to get together when I got close. We hung out and caught up for a couple hours before I headed back to trail with two older men that Jetpack had secured a ride from earlier.
It was close to 3 pm when we hiked out from the trailhead, and it would be nearly ten miles of gravel service road walking before turning back into trail. This made for easy, mindless hiking.
I don’t think I barely walked at 2 mph the entire time, but after reaching the trail we only went slightly less than 3 more miles before calling it an early day. Jetpack wanted to camp in a flattish meadow that had sparse tree cover with a southbound thru-hiking couple named Scifi and Sandhill.
I had somewhat of a bad feeling about the spot – as far as temperatures tonight and tomorrow morning will go, but was talked into it in the end. It is a gorgeous spot, but at what cost I ask? AT WHAT COST!? Kidding. Just being melodramatic. Hopefully it won’t be too bad.
Jetpack is talking about doing a high twenty-mile day tomorrow, but I’m going to see how I feel in the morning before I commit to anything.
