Deaf guy checking in.
I was up and hiking by 6:30 am, and after 2.5 miles, I began a more than 27 mile road walk into the town of Anaconda. As luck would have it, Montana would decide to start warming up as soon as the shade is all but nonexistent.
I won’t lie to you, today was not fun. It was one of those days you just grin and bear it. I didn’t feel great and I didn’t feel bad – I just felt… fine.
There were four other hikers around me this morning that hitched (caught rides) the 20+ miles straight into town. The day before that, there were 10+ northbound flip-floppers who did it, and who have been doing it at every road crossing they come to. This shouldn’t bother me, and I don’t lose sleep over it, but in reality… it irks me. It’s like watching someone get paid the same amount as you for doing a fraction of the work. That’s the best way I can describe it, and if you think seeing that wouldn’t irk you to some degree… then you’re a better human than I.
So today was hot. The roads were hot. The shade wasn’t there. And the speeding vehicles were aplenty. I hiked 13 miles before taking my first shade break – then 4 more miles before the next one… then 5 miles…and finally a 7+ mile push to cap off a 29-mile day before 5 pm.
Everything in Anaconda is completely booked, so I’m sleeping on the floor of a shed with 3 other hikers on the edge of town that’s been designated for hikers. It’s free, so I’m nothing but grateful for the dry, mostly bug-free space. Ironically enough, these 3 hikers all hiked in here. I haven’t seen even a rumor of the hikers who drove in early.
On the bright side, Dale left me a beer in a cooler here, so it was waiting when I got in. On the dark side, while I was running errands on the little communal bicycle they have at the shed – an SUV slammed straight into a doe and her young fawn, sending them tumbling down the road in my direction. On the lighter side… they both got up and ran off.
I’ll probably hike out at some point tomorrow unless I’m really not feeling it. In other news, I think I’m going to shave my head tomorrow. I just can’t take the long hair anymore. I look insane, and two cops in an SUV drove by me making Chewbacca noises while I was walking through town. I’m not sure if that’s funny or sad, or to which party it’s funny or sad. Anaconda’s finest have a sense of humor. “Hardy har-harrrr…”
Also, I poured hydrogen peroxide in my ears and it feels way better!
