Today was a testament to how strong we’ve gotten.
We didn’t start hiking until a little after 8 am. The trail was well maintained, if not a little muddy and rooty in some places. The humidity felt turned down, and the overcast skies made for pleasurable hiking.
All day we were within oak hammocks and planted pine forests – dipping and climbing along and over river banks and deep ravines. Not until today did we finally hit terrain and forest that reminds me of home. I like it.
To be honest, we felt extremely lazy today. We didn’t hike fast (at least it didn’t feel like it), and we took 3 breaks that were all over an hour each. It was almost a surprise to see that we got over 18 miles, because it sure didn’t feel like we worked that hard. I guess all the crappy swamp and road walking we’ve been doing was forcing us to pay attention to every second. But today, we could be carefree about our seconds, act lazy, and the miles still came.
Aside from a cottonmouth that surprised me by dodging into a creek (right where I was getting water)… today was an unremarkable day.
It’s been nearly 2 weeks since we’ve done laundry; my clothes are to the point where I can barely stand them. I’m fairly certain my shorts are growing mold. Anyway, what I’m really looking forward to is going commando in a nice pair of blue jeans. I’ve been wearing shorts and/or athletic underwear every day for 2.5 months. I’m ready for a fashion/fabric change – and also, to not be caked in baby powder all the time.
I think we’re going to go into Defuniak Springs tomorrow. It’s a side trail that will add 6 miles, but I think we’re just gonna do it. Not sure if we’ll get a room just yet, but who knows…
