Thoughts/Stories-

We slept in and took our time walking into Okeechobee. We decided to do a nearo today, get a room, rest our feet, wash off and wash our clothes before this next long stretch.

Waiting on that Pizza Hut Pizza Buffet

The trail goes right through the middle of Okeechobee for about 4 miles, so we were walking through no matter what. The streets were again so busy with semis and dump trucks that it was hard to keep Katana still on my shoulders.

It’s a little embarrassing to admit this, but one of my more useless talents is knowing every single word to the Julie Andrews song “My Favorite Things” from the 1965 movie, “The Sound of Music.” When Katana gets antsy and nervous, I sing it to her from start to finish, sometimes substituting her name into it, just to hold her attention more. I like to think that hearing my voice and the familiar rhythm talking to her helps to calm her down. In fact, I’m pretty sure it does. And even if it didn’t, it’s still a really fun song to sing.

Eastern Stickbug that found me

Nothing else crazy to report today. I guess me, Schweppes, Parks, and Katana are a posse now. We’ll see how long it lasts. I’m more than ready for these next sections!

Go to Day 19.

  1. Well welcome to Okeechobee! I grew up there. I was born in Northern CA and moved there at 7. Talk about a culture/environment shock! Mountains and zero humidity to swamp and well stupid insane humidity. I moved there in 73 and lived there until 95. Different place then than it is now for sure but still good people. My parents still live there in the house I grew up in.. I think you will find the hiking is going to much more to your liking now. Some of the most beautiful FlL prairie lands are to the North of Okeechobee. It’s as close to being in primitive and natural FL as you will find in the south. Enjoy! ūüėéūüôĆūüŹľ

  2. I enjoy reading about your adventures, but when you mentioned my favorite movie and ‚ÄúMy Favorite Things‚ÄĚ pretty sure you are an ok kinda guy! Kudos for loving and taking care of Katana the way you do!!!

  3. You are getting closer and closer to where I live- I’m not in central Florida but on the east coast- as the crow flies straight west probably just north of Kissimmee prairie and south of 3 lakes wildlife management area- if there is a need for anything I’d do my darndest to help out. Really enjoying the trip so far. Katana is absolutely amazing.
