Katana had a stellar first day back! We didn’t leave out of Cascade Locks until almost noon,  but still chalked up 19 miles flat.  I was chasing her down the trail all day,  and had to alternate between on-leash and off-leash, just to give myself a break.

It was quite a change to what I’ve been used to for the past couple months,  but I enjoyed her company immensely today. No hiccups,  no close calls,  nothing out of the ordinary; it was just another day hiking with the catfox.

The intensity she hiked with today felt like she was sending me a message. “I’m not handicap dad,  I’m handiCAPABLE!”

The trail itself was pretty good today too; a few rocky areas and short stretches of broken up shale, but nothing to write home about.  I carried her on my hip for several bad,  but short stretches that only lasted a couple hundred feet each; if anything, just to save her paws a little extra grief.

I definitely have some reconditioning to do with her, as she was an extra terrible listener today.  Perhaps she was just excited,  or maybe she was just home without any discipline for too long,  maybe both.  Either way,  I have nothing but time on my hands to make her remember the old routine.

My shoes are pretty much done for.  It’s funny,  because usually the degradation process for shoes is fairly gradual,  and you’ll know when you need a new pair before it’s an emergency.  The shoes I’m wearing now went from “perfect,” to “painful” overnight. I’ve got about 700 miles on them,  and the tread is nearly gone.  I’ll need a new pair before the end.

I’m switched back into my hammock tonight,  and everything feels right in the world. Katana is snuggled up in the crook of my arm,  I’m toasty warm, and tomorrow will be another smooth day, hopefully.

Go top day 146.
