We pushed our checkout time all the way to the limit before making the 31 mile, 4,000 ft drive up to Sonora Pass.
We said our goodbyes to our loved ones and set off on an uphill climb. Katana was all over the place, ecstatic to be hiking again. I could hardly keep her on the trail.
The most entertaining part of the day was watching the little demon run all over the snow packs. Whether the trail went through the packs or not, she made straight for them and made sure she’d left her paw prints everywhere. I was just happy to see her happy.
My only concern is the broken up rocks. The trail had a lot of sharp rocks on it today, and although Katana made short work of them, I know from our experience in the desert, that she can only keep that up for so long before her paws get sore. She won’t wear her booties, so there is almost nothing I can do, besides carry her over the worst of it.
We took it slow, and made it a short 11 mile day, with lots of little breaks. I’m still going stove-less, so I made a fire to boil my water and re-hydrate my mountain house meal. I never, ever, buy mountain house meals, but I found a great deal on them in town, and decided to spoil myself.
The goal is to push 20 mile days into Lake Tahoe, so Katana is going to be getting broke back in pretty fast. She’s a trooper, so I have nothing but faith in her.
